The Day My Children Became My Teachers
Worrying has always been part of my daily reality as a mother. Over the years, I have learned and re-learned to live with it.
I worry about my children’s safety. I wonder how their day went, whether everything is okay, whether they are carrying burdens they haven’t told me about. Like many mothers, I sometimes worry more than I should.
I’d like to believe we’ve always had open hearts with one another. Still, I know there are things they choose to keep to themselves.
Then, in early 2021, I was tested.
A long-kept secret of Tenten was finally entrusted to me. What surprised me most wasn’t entirely about what I learned—it was about ime.
“What will people say about me as a mother? I thought I had everything covered.”
Looking back now, I can honestly admit that my worry had quietly become self-centered.
For almost a month, every weekend became another long conversation between Tenten and me. There were tears, difficult questions, uncomfortable silences, and many attempts to understand each other.
The Wisdom Of My Children
Ningning gently told me,
“Ma, kung nag-struggle ka na umunawa dahil sa pag-aalala mo sa sasabihin ng tao, eh gaano pa ang struggle ni Tenten na ang tagal nya tinago sa pag-aalala sa yo.”
(“Ma, if you’re struggling to understand because your worried about what people will say, imagine how much more Tenten struggled, keeping this from you for so long time because he was worried about how you would react.”)
Those words stopped me.
Then Noknok’s simple reaction.
“Yun lang? Problema ba yun?”
(“That’s it? Is that really a problem?”)
Yeye, Tenten’s bestfriend/confidante, had known all along, but chose not to tell me. She respected his brother’s trust and believed the story was his to share.
A very close friend said,
“It is very brave of Tenten to come out. He is going against the world and he can only have the backing of his family and most certainly his mom. He is most likely depending on that.”
Those words pierced my heart.
In that moment, I realized I wasn’t the mother I thought I was.
My children weren’t better than me. They simply saw what I had not yet learned to see. They became my greatest teachers. By God’s grace, acceptance slowly replaced fear (of being judged).
Becoming A Safe Space
I realized something equally important.
If I truly wanted my children to keep coming to me with honest conversations, I had to become someone they could safely come to—not someone they feared disappointing.
I still expect open communication as always, but to achieve a good one, I must be ready to respond with an empathetic heart.
YES, our story found its happy ending.
On Mother’s Day, May 9, 2021, we celebrated at home with whatever food we could find in the kitchen. Nothing fancy, yet a very meaningful Mother’s Day celebration.
That evening, Tenten and I once again found ourselves in another heart-to-heart conversation—open, deep, honest, and surprisingly light.
He helped me understand my own heart as a mother who worries. And I hope he also saw mine beginning to understand his.

Three Simple Reminders
Since then, three simple reminders have carried a much deeper meaning for me:
- “Don’t allow your mind to be cluttered with worries.”
- “There’s only time for loving...”
- “Be happy and have fun.”
Perhaps that is what motherhood continues to teach me. We never really stop worrying. But little by little, we learn that love speaks louder than fear.
And sometimes, the greatest lessons a mother learns… come from her own children. 😉
