God Filled the Gaps

When my children were growing up, I wasn’t the mother who did everything right.
I didn’t wake up early in the mornings to prepare my children for school. Because of that, they learned to prepare themselves—a habit of independence they proudly carried into adulthood. Two of them are now working, and two have finished college.
I wasn’t much of a cook either, although I still smile whenever my children talk about the few specific dishes of mine they actually loved.
I also wasn’t always the parent who was physically present at school to monitor my children’s studies the way other mothers were.
And then, there was that one unforgettable moment. I completely forgot to fetch my eldest child, Noknok, from school. The school guard ended up bringing him home on the back of a motorcycle! To this day, I still look back and wonder, how could I have possibly forgotten that?
The list of my shortcomings can go on and on.
I cannot use the alibi “because I couldn't,” simply because I could. It’s just that… I did not.
Evidence of God's Grace
Yet, whether it was because of my imperfections or in spite of them, my children have become responsible grown-up adults.
It is a beautiful feeling to see how things unfolded. For instance, my middle children suddenly became passionate about cooking. Now, they love to create their own unique recipes.
Looking back today, I smile at the mother I used to be. I still remember the things I failed to do, but I remember God’s immense faithfulness even more.
My children are now adults. They have learned to stand on their own, to care for themselves, to love one another, and above all, to love God. When I look at them today, I no longer see proof of my shortcomings. I see evidence of God’s grace.
I used to wonder whether my imperfections would leave permanent gaps in my children’s lives. Instead, I discovered a beautiful truth: where I lacked, God quietly provided.
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
This realization brings me back to one of the favorite songs my late husband and I used to sing together. I am still holding onto these beautiful lyrics of a song taken from Lamentations 3:22-23:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases
His mercies never come to an end;
They are new every morning,
New every morning.
Great is Thy faithfulness, Oh Lord,
Great is Thy faithfulness.
